Alabama Shakes Biography
The story of Alabama Shakes begins in 2009 in a high school psychology class in Athens, Alabama USA. Lead singer Brittany Howard, who had started playing guitar a few years earlier, approached bassist Zac Cockrell and asked if he wanted to try making music together. The two recruited drummer Steve Johnson and newly christened The Shakes, they experimented with many different styles of music including roots Rock, progressive Rock, Soul and Country. The trio became a four-piece with the addition of lead guitarist Heath Fogg. They eventually found their way to a Nashville studio in early 2011 and In October, the group, who by now had changed their name to the Alabama Shakes, gave a performance at the CMJ Festival in New York City that earned a glowing review from the New York Times.
In April 2012 Alabama Shakes issued its debut album, "Boys & Girls", which debuted at #8 on The Billboard 200 and also made an impressive foray into the European charts highlighted by the first single, the hypnotic, show-stopping plea "Hold On".
