Aqualung is the solo project of Southampton, ENGLAND-born Matt Hales. He began playing in a cover band during his teen years and after moving to London, he freelanced on the local Alternative-Rock Pop-Rock scene.
Aqualung's eponymous debut album was recorded in Hales' home studio and released in the U.K. in late September 2002 on B-Unique; it peaked at #15 on the British Albums chart getting gold before the year's end on the strength of the main single, "Strange And Beautiful (I'll Put A Spell On You)", which hit #7 on the U.K. Top 40 chart.
"Still Life", followed a year later, but received little attention and failed to dent the charts.
"Strange And Beautiful", Aqualung's first U.S. album release, a complilation of first two albums, was released in spring 2005; the 12-track set, which reached #108 on The Billboard 200 chart, featured the Adult Top 40 hit single "Brighter Than Sunshine".
"Memory Man", the third LP from the melodic Alternative-Rock project of Matt Hales, was released in North-America in March 2007 through Columbia Records. The album, which yielded the minor hit single "Pressure Suit", peaked at #88 on The Billboard 200.
Aqualung's fourth album and third U.S. release, "Words And Music", which Hales coproduced with his brother and musical righthand man Ben Hales, who also provided guitar, bass, harmony vocals and cowrote several songs, followed in October 2008; it included the single "On My Knees".
