Franz Ferdinand Biography
Glasgow, SCOTLAND-based Alternative-Rock quartet Franz Ferdinand traced its roots in 2001, when singer + guitarist Alex Kapranos, guitarist Nick McCarthy and bassist Bob Hardy decided to start a band; they soon enlisted the help of drummer Paul Thomson and began gigging regularly around their hometown.
Two years after forming, the band signed a recording contract with Domino Records who released their self-titled debut album in early 2004, the record hit #3 on the U.K. chart and reached the #32 spot on The Billboard 200 Albums list; the first single off of the CD, the transatlantic smash "Take Me Out", rose to #4 in Britain, crashed into the top 10 of the official Canadian Singles chart and hit #3 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks; the follow-up single, "The Dark Of The Matinée", smashed into the top 10 in U.K. and "Michael" reached the #11 position on the same chart; the final single, "This Fire", peaked at #17 on the Billboard's Modern Rock chart.
After initially choosing to self-title its second album, Franz Ferdinand has opted to call the set "You Could Have It So Much Better"; the disc was released in October 2005 and the first single off the record, "Do You Want To", quickly catapulted into the top 5 in U.K. and peaked at #9 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks. "You Could Have It So Much Better" brought the band to the top of the Official British Albums chart as well as into the top 10 on The Billboard 200 and to the #3 slot on the Top Canadian Albums charts. Another single, "The Fallen", went to #14 in U.K. and #39 on the U.S. alt-Rock radio charts.
After nearly a year working on the third album, Franz Ferdinand unleashed a single, "Lucid Dreams", in August 2008 and followed it up with The Modern Rock top 40 hit "Ulysses". The two songs were featured on the band's third album, "Tonight: Franz Ferdinand", which arrived in January 2009 going straight into the top 3 in U.K. and Canada. In U.S. the disc hit #9 on The Billboard 200.
