in Leeds as a junior reporter on the Yorkshire Evening Post. After two
years he decided to further his studies; on graduating from Leeds University
in 1973 Knopfler decided to go to London and try to break into the Rock
By 1977, he was playing with his brother David and his roommate John Illsley; during that summer, the trio cut a demo with drummer Pick Withers and with his arrival the quartet christened themselves Dire Straits releasing their eponymous debut in autumn of 1978.
