Cage The Elephant Biography
The Alternative-Rock ensemble Cage The Elephant was formed in 2005 by lead singer Matt Shultz and guitarist Brad Shultz in Bowling Green, Kentucky USA, where the brothers were only allowed to listen to religious music, growing up on an alternative religious commune. To complete their line-up, the Shultz brothers recruited childhood friends: guitarist Lincoln Parrish, bassist Daniel Tichenor and drummer Jared Champion.
The quintet built up a sizable Stateside following after acclaimed appearances at the Lollapalooza and Bonaroo festivals which led to a tour with Queens Of The Stone Age in 2007. Cage the Elephant then left its small-town roots for the U.K. and in August 2008 they released their debut self-titled album on British indie label Relentless Records. The CD had its Stateside release in May 2009; after a sluggish start on the charts, it climbed into the top 10 of the Independent Albums list, earned enough sales to debut in the upper half of The Billboard 200 and its accompanying single, "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked", made a huge impact on alt-Rock radio as it hops to #3 on The Hot Modern Rock Tracks. "Back Against The Wall" and "In One Ear", the two subsequent singles, burn up the Billboard's Alternative chart peaking at #1 and also crossed over to The Rock Songs listing rising to the #12 and #3 spots, respectively.
Cage The Elephant released their eagerly awaited sophomore album, "Thank You Happy Birthday", in January 2011. The disc, a 12 song collection of a raucous and inspired Rock, opened at #2 on The Billboard 200 and at #7 on the Top Canadian Albums charts. The first single, "Shake Me Down", soared to #1 on both Alternative Songs and Rock Songs listings. "Around My Head", the second single, peaked at #15 on the Hot Modern Rock Tracks, it was followed by "Aberdeen", which went to #7 on the same chart and the minor hit titled "Always Something".
The Kentucky troop scored a new Alternative Rock radio #1 smash with "Come A Little Closer", the inaugural single from the band's third outing, "Melophobia", which was released in October 2013 and soon bulleted into the top 20 of The Billboard 200 Albums chart.
