Tenacious D Biography
Tenacious D got started in Los Angeles, California USA, in the mid-'90s when Jack Black teamed up with his fellow musician & actor Kyle Gass; the two-man band, in which they both play acoustic guitar and sing, though Black is the primary singer, soon developed a bizarre hybrid of heavy-Rock and Folk combined with comical lyrics: “they are truly the greatest band on earth and have incredible, sexual prowess”.
The duo, also known as theD, played several gigs, including opening sets for Beck, Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters, before they were signed by Epic Records who released their eponymous debut in September 2001; the CD climbed to #33 on The Billboard Top 200 chart and went platinum spawning a moderate alt-Rock radio hit with "Tribute".
In November 2006 Black and Gass released "Tenacious D The Pick Of Destiny", the soundtrack to their first full-length motion picture; the album, which debuted at #8 on The Billboard 200, mixes songs and bits from the movie, but it plays like a hilarious concept album.
Tenacious D's first studio album in over six years, "Rize Of The Fenix", was released in May 2012. The D describes the making of the album as “journey similar to that of Gandolph in The Lord Of The Rings”. It was recorded in a garage and features Jack Black and Kyle Gass, performing with Dave Grohl on drums, John Spiker on bass + piano and John Konesky on electric guitar. The disc hit #4 on The Billboard 200 and #7 on the Top Canadian Albums charts.
